wedi Tilebacker is used as an intermediate substrate to
even out floors, improve the resistance to water penetration and assist with
thermal insulation. It should not bridge movement joints.
The base and any screed
(1) should be free of surface contamination or
old finishes so a clean surface is exposed. In the case of new concrete or screed,
adequate time must be allowed for curing and drying so any shrinkage occurs
before installation.
A suitable cement-based adhesive such as Ardex X 77 or X 77 S should be trowelled
out and combed with the recommended notched trowel to give
(2) a ribbed
bed. The Tilebacker boards
(3) are laid directly onto this and bedded
in so that no voids remain underneath. The boards should be laid so the joints
are staggered and they must not bridge any movement joints whose integrity must
be preserved.
The adhesive must be allowed to harden.
The joints are then taped
(7) using either the TT25 Glass Fibre Jointing
tape or WT50 Waterpoof Joint Sealing Tape in a fresh layer of Ardex X 77 or X 77 S
adhesive applied with a taping knife so it is free of trapped air bubbles. More
adhesive is applied on top of the tape and feathered off to the surface of the
boards.
When this adhesive has set, the tiles
(5) can be fixed using a thin solid
bed fixing technique
(4) to ensure no voids are left. For more rapid
installation, Ardurit S38 can be used.
After the tile bed has hardened, the joints between tiles
(6) can be
grouted with the appropriate Ardex-Flex or Ardex grout mortar incorporating
Ardex E101 admix.
