  Fixing Guide - Direct Fixing

Uneven wall surface

Where there are clean, sound brick, block or concrete walls, wedi Tilebacker can be used to create the even and moisture-resistant surface essential as a substrate for high quality tiled finishes.

Wall surfaces with considerable irregularities (2) can be brought to true using Tilebacker boards applied with either dabs or strips of suitable adhesive. Ardex X 77 or X 77 S is one suitable material to use.

First, the wedi Tilebacker Board of minimum thickness 10mm is cut to length. The Ardex X 77 or X 77 S is applied to the wall to provide perimeter strips (1) or dabs to receive the Tilebacker board.

While the adhesive is still fresh and moist, the board is offered up and, using a timber batten to spread the load, is beaten in to ensure a well-fixed, true surface. It is then left for the adhesive to set and harden. Drill through the wedi Tiebacker Board and adhesive dab into the wall and drive in wedi Dowels at the rate of 5 per square metre.

A layer of adhesive is applied to joints and jointing tape (either TT25 Glass Fibre Jointing Tape or WT50 Waterproof Joint Sealing Tape) is applied (5) while the adhesive is fresh. The tape is smoothed down with a taping knife or similar tool to remove any air bubbles and achieve a firm bedding. A thin layer of adhesive is now applied on top of the tape and feathered down onto the board surface.

Tiles can be applied once the taping work has set. Again, Ardex X 77 or X 77 S is an appropriate adhesive. In wet areas, a thin solid bed fixing technique (4) should be used to ensure there are no voids behind the tiles.

Once the bed has hardened sufficiently, the spaces between tiles can be grouted (8) with either the appropriate Ardex cement-based grout, incorporating Ardex E101 admix or the appropriate Ardex-Flex cement-based grout.

Movement joints (7) in the tile bed, such as between adjacent walls, should be sealed with an appropriate sealant.

Flat wall surface

If the walls are flat, Ardex X 77 or X 77 S can be applied either direct to the wall surface or to the wedi Tilebacker board (minimum thickness 6mm) and combed out with an 8mm x 8mm toothed and notched trowel over the complete board area to provide a ribbed bed. The board is then offered up to the surface and tapped up true.

The boards are butt jointed.

Dowel Fixing

Where the wall is flat and solid, but it is not possible to prepare the surface because of contamination or an unsound finish, it is possible to fix the wedi Tilebacker to the wall using wedi dowels at the rate of 5 per square metre.

A layer of adhesive is applied to joints and jointing tape (either TT25 Glass Fibre Jointing Tape or WT50 Waterproof Joint Sealing Tape) is applied while the adhesive is fresh.
